[There's no getting around it. It's an essay. About the dangers of sugar abuse on your health, linked to several medical articles. In it, she links the abuse of sugar to depression, diabetes, dopamine imbalances, fueling cancer cells and making tumors more aggressive, impotence, increased risk of heart attacks and heart disease, increased inflammation leading to joint pain and arthritis, increased risk of strokes, kidney failure, and rotting teeth.

Included in her essay is a list of signs of sugar abuse, including false teeth, rotten teeth, pupil dilation, jitteriness, mid-afternoon 'crashes', and other symptoms.

She wraps up with a plea for people to seek help and rehabilitation for their addictions and avoid anyone who might try to push such addictive substances on them.]

[That's not a good enough answer. That's an answer from someone with very little experience with the kind of person Rico is. That's an answer that's more problem than solution.]

Okay, so what's your plan for round two? Or round three? Or when he starts going after Pidge to get to you?

I've worked with people like Rico, and I've fought people like Rico. They're smart, they're egotistical, and they have no morals. Any fight with him is going to be long-term and dirty, so if he starts something, you either get backup or get the hell out of dodge.

Okay, first of all? If he starts a fight with me, I doubt he'll just let me waltz right out of the room. How's that going to work? "Sorry, Officer Friendly, I promised Wash I'd tap out so someone else can tap in to fight you instead." And even if I bring in someone else to fight for me, it'll still be me siccing someone on him. If he's that much of a jerk he won't let things slide.

Second: if there's a round two at all, he should be booted from the team, because after round one with Kubo, a round two with me would technically be round three. If he's that dangerous and he can't keep it under control? He shouldn't be here. And I really doubt Kid Q will keep putting up with it if he's already been warned.

And even if she did keep putting up with it, there are other ways. Like unfortunate videos of him beating up young beloved teen Legionnaires sent to Neutrino News and the Science Police. He'd be a PR tire fire. Like...on top of being a tire fire in general.

[He crosses his arms.]

Also, Pidge would kick his butt. She beat up a walking nuclear furnace all by herself.

Yeah, she beat it in a fight. It probably would have gone differently if that furnace had had access to her quarters, or her hab, or her lab space. Everyone knows lab accidents happen all the time.

[It's a pretty awful thing to say. It's also the usual MO for someone like Rico, like- well, Felix. The stone you leave unturned is the one they'll hide a nest of scorpions under.]

And round two might be on a mission, or off-planet, or anywhere without direct accountability. You're smart enough to get yourself out of a bad situation - I want to make sure that's your default when you're dealing with him.

And the PR solution only works after the damage is done. You are not acceptable damage.

I just- you see what I'm going for here, right? Ounce of prevention. [Because people don't always survive until the pound of cure happens.]

[He just sits there with his arms crossed, clearly cranky about it, especially the idea that Rico might be a total creeping creeper and go into Pidge's room to set up some kind of trap, all because of some stupid potential slight.]

[He knows Wash is right.]

[He also doesn't want to admit that because it's stupid that Wash is right and this guy is still here.]

[He throws up his hands.]

Why is he even on the team?! Even some of the people that are obviously stabby-stab terrorists, ninjas, and mercenaries know how to play nice. For now. If he can't, he needs to be gone.

Preaching to the choir. I was the one Kubo called for backup, remember?

[He sighs.] It's all hands on deck. Sadly, we need him until he proves the costs outweigh the benefits. Even Reaper was useful while he was here.

Well, if he's actually that bad, and ever pushes the line into "absolutely necessary for defense of self and others" I'm launching him into orbit.

[It's said with the kind of childish churlishness that comes from someone young who's been hurt a lot being mad at finding out a place that's supposed to be (relatively) safe apparently isn't.]

[And he also means it.]

Not a jury in the world would convict you.

...though you probably shouldn't test that theory for a while.

[But he did kind of wreck Dipper's sugar shock with a reality check, and he needs to bring this back around somehow.]

Look, if you ever need a place to go, my room is still trapped. I'll show you how to disable and reset them, and you can play with DC.

[The cranky expression fades to what's really underneath, and that's a scared kid who thought Legion World was kind of sort of safe, finding out it's a lot less safe than he thought.]

[Even with people like Reaper, he knew he was completely under their radar. Even if they ever did turn on the team, it's not like they'd have targeted him specifically.]

[So the idea of someone running around that's fine picking fights with Kubo of all people...]

Can you show me how to do traps in my room, too? For, like, when I'm sleeping? I know how to make monster traps but to make most of the ones I know, you need to use trees or dig a hole in the ground or use foliage for camoflage.

[His Reaper traps had been mostly for humiliation; his Rico traps, on the other hand, have a lot more stopping power, to the point where he's notified the staff that no one is to go into his room under any circumstances unless he's there to let them in. The traps aren't going to kill anyone, but the staff still doesn't deserve to be on the wrong end of them and he's not taking any chances.]

Yeah. I have a few that can stop a man in his tracks.

There's one condition: you have to let the staff know about them. Nobody goes in your room unless you're there to disable the traps for them.

[He nods.]

You'll already know how to get in, so I'll warn the staff and just show Pidge how to do it herself.

...because they'll be guarding my suite. In general. Not that she'd be going into my room.

Dipper, I'm not going to judge what you get up to. Just...let me know if you have any questions, or if you need the talk.

[He's pretty sure that Dipper's never been past first base, if he's ever gotten up to bat at all. He's also pretty sure that telling him no will just encourage him further. Might as well take the middle ground and be prepared.]

[He still waves his hands frantically.]

I really, really meant the traps would just be guarding my suite in general, though. I really did.

[He turns bright red.]

So I'm good. I don't need any talks about...things. No things are happening.

Plus, the teen websites I read were really informative.

[Another pause, and he goes even redder, as he realizes that means he just admitted space googling the subject.]

And I only looked at them because I'm a naturally curious person! Technically it's biological science!

[Yep, he's still a kid.]

Dipper. I just said I'm not judging you. It's fine.

[Hilarious - not that Wash is going to show that - but fine.]
