Whistling in the Dark - [Network Post 1]

[The first sign of catastrophe is the entire ship lurching. Legion World is huge so for the whole ship to lurch, that suggests that there's something seriously wrong. Klaxons start blaring and red and blue lights start flashing. Support start start running through the hallways to deal with system malfunctions.]

[Ferro is a people person. He's friendly with most of the staff because he's friendly with everyone. So he notices when one of them doesn't act the way he normally does, carrying himself strangely. He notices something is wrong even more when the man doesn't acknowledge him when he asks if he knows what's wrong and if he needs help with anything in this area of Legion World. So when he sees that staff worker slinking around a corner, walking strange, he follows, takes out his omnicom, and starts whispering into it.]

Uh, guys? Something weird is going on. I know you all felt the ship shake, too. And...some people are acting weird.

[He points his omnicom to show them the technician, who's working on a panel and muttering to himself.]

Cold. Dark. Bring the dark. Bring the dark. Cold.

[A whisper.] I think he might be sabotaging something. [He steps forward, trying to reason with him first.]

Jerem! Jerem, what are you doing? Why are you talking like that?

[The man's eyes go wide and for a moment they see a flash of darkness in them.]

No. More. Poison.

[Andrew gasps but tries to keep his voice calm.]

Jerem...Jerem...you should come with me. To Medbay. You're not acting like yourself.

[The man grabs onto a metal bar to brace himself and flips a switch in the panel. Then there's a malfunction in one of the gravity shields and the hull of the room suddenly breaks, and air starts escaping, causing Ferro to lose his grip on his omnicom. As it flips end over end, they're treated to a blurred view of Ferro flying out into the void. Then the omnicom hits some debris and the transmission goes black.]

[Only about a minute or so later, Ferro appears again, looking shaken. He's in one of the hallways of Legion World and an airlock is visible behind him. He's clearly using one of the hall comm units rather than his omnicom this time and his body is covered in frost and condensation.]

I'm okay! I just flew back in through one of the airlocks. It's a good thing I don't need to breathe. I think Jerem managed to hold on until the backup hull shielding went into place because I didn't see him outside.

Guys, I think he was possessed or something! And I think the ship shaking is things breaking because he's sabotaging them -- and he might not be the only one. We don't know if this is affecting more people!

[In the video, and around all of them in person, Legion World shudders again. The lights where Ferro is go out and the dim red emergency lights replace them.]

[ooc: This comm post can be used throughout the plot for the groups to communicate as they figure things out about the Lux and how to fight them and periodically communicate with each other. The logs for the plot will be in the log comm. Eventually when they come up with a plan to end all this in this post, one of the Legionnaire npcs will do a new post that lays out the complete plan.]

This is...less than optimal.

[Brainiac 5 is clearly at one of the hall consoles in Engineering, rather than using his omnicom. Behind him the engineering staff is rushing around like chickens with their heads cut off, trying to fix sparking consoles and what looks like the wreckage of a small explosion. Brainiac himself is already sweating, clearly frazzled, his fingers moving rapidly as he taps away on a console below the screen.]

There are definitely multiple saboteurs. In Engineering, we're reading systems failures throughout all of Legion World and they all started simultaneously: life support, hull shielding, gravity control, fire suppression systems -- all vital systems that support habitation. It looks like they're even sabotaging auxiliary systems. Only some of the life pods are responding to evacuation protocols and some have launched prematurely. We can potentially evac all the staff but only by making multiple trips with the Bouncing Boy and the cruisers and we may not have time to do that before life support fails.

We're also reading damage to the sensor array that's causing coolant to leak into the gravitomagnetic encabulator and it's causing entoteric pulses throughout the ship that are causing intermittent outages in any vulnerable electronics. We can't shut down either or we risk Legion World losing its stable orbit around the planet. If we relocate Legion World the results could be catatrophic because the ship is acting as a gravitational counterbalance to the Lunar Debris Field to keep it from crashing into Earth.

[There's a reason Legion World is stationed around Earth when it would make more sense for it to be a safer distance away. The moon was destroyed some time ago when they were fighting an enemy and Legion World has been used as a counterbalance to keep the debris field safely in orbit ever since.]

All of you need to put on your transuits; they're in the kits we provided to you after you woke up. They'll automatically scan you and conform to your body shape. The entoteric pulses may cause intermittent loss of functionality but while they are functioning they'll provide you breathable air and protection from any environmental threats -- including the vacuum of space.

If you see any of the infected, report in with whatever you find to the rest of us. We need to discern out what the creatures responsible for this are, their motives, their mode of transmission, and if there's any way to safely cure the hosts. If you can manage a scan with your omnicoms, there's an option to transmit the results to the rest of us. That will allow those of us that are scientifically inclined to work on a possible solution and allow us all to --

[There is a pingpingping noise behind him and by the time he turns around to look at the source it's already too late. A complex array filled with pipes and complicated equipment suddenly explodes in a huge burst of flame and concussive force. The viewscreen cracks in a fractal pattern and Brainiac is knocked off screen -- or possibly has been blown up.]

[Okay, nope, he's not dead. He pops up like a daisy, his hair mussed up into a ridiculous number of cowlicks, surrounded by an aura of blue light -- his forcefield. It protected him from the worst of the blast but the concussive force was still enough to cause some damage. His nose is now streaming green blood. He holds up a shield to block the worst of the fires burning in the engine room from the engineering staff as they help the injured off the ground and start evacuating the room. One of them starts going for some valves but Brainiac starts yelling at them.]

Leave it! We need to vacate this section immediately! We can shut off the plasma conduits at the Miskar array!

[He briefly turns back to the broken screen.]

Do what Donatello said and head to life support controls and areas at risk of hull breach! If you can't access the internal sensor mapping, the staff can direct you at areas the intruders might target!

[He'd tell them to wait on Kid Q's orders but with the comms possibly going out intermittently, they have no way of knowing for sure that she's even able to access them right now. And he has no more time to waste. Fire is rapidly overtaking the room and he runs off to shield the staff and get them out. Eventually the fire causes the screen to melt and shut off.]

I hate to add to the list of problems, but I'm seeing multiple launches. Need visual to be sure, but unless the malfunctions are causing false readings? We may have just lost all our escape pods.

[....welp.]

What about the cruisers?

[Ideally, they'd be able to fix everything here and not need to get anybody off, but.

Sometimes things are less than ideal.]

The cruisers are fine so far. Unfortunately, the only ship designed to transport large amounts of people that we have on hand is the Bouncing Boy. Even if we had enough people trained to pilot it and all the cruisers, it'd still take several trips to get everyone off. And, like Brainy said, life support is failing fast enough that we may not have time for that.

Okay, good to know.

[In the sense that it's better not to be surprised by it, anyway. A situation where it's not happening for them to have to know would be better, but when do things ever go that well?]

Once we get out of this one, remind me to talk to you again about that. The "enough people trained."

Trust me, that's something I've wanted to fix for ages. It's not a lack of desire, it's a lack of personnel. Legion World was designed with more staff than we currently have on hand in mind. But, after the rest of the team disappeared, a lot of the support staff left for other opportunities.

It's part of the reason things escalated so quickly. If we were operating at full capacity we would've caught on to what was happening way before it became a problem.

I'm a career starfighter pilot. I doubt I'll need much training to get going, but I would want to know which controls are in the last place I'm going to look for them and whether green lights are still the good ones in this universe.
