Briefing [post-plot] [set a half hour after they all return] [video]

[Kid Quantum has hit the sonic shower and changed into a fresh uniform, but she hasn’t hit the Med Bay to take care of the cut on her cheek. The medtechs are too busy with people who actually need their care, a scabbed-over cut is can be taken care of at any time. She looks tired: she hasn’t had a chance to rest since the remainder of the Legion was called to Cargg.]

Just to save everyone the need to explain things, this is a briefing to let both mission teams know what happened to the other. This message is secured even away from Legion staffers, so everyone can feel secure in sharing mission data. Everyone settle in and get comfy: it’s going to be a long one.

The team that boarded the Silent Horizon to find the Robotican crew members found themselves facing an otherdimensional monster that morphed part of the ship into its own pocket universe. By all accounts, it was a nightmare. Literally. The landscape inside apparently changed around them to create a living nightmare. While we had no casualties, apparently some of the team had their minds and bodies altered by the being, before they were saved and turned back.

Before the being, the Faceless, was destroyed, he showed them a vision of his original world being destroyed by Chronoblivion. They were at least able to successfully rescue the 55 Robotican crew members that were missing by saving the Robotican whose datacore they’d downloaded themselves into when their original bodies were destroyed.

While they were on the mission, the rest of us got dispatched to Cargg to respond to a catastrophe there. One of Chronoblivion’s Heralds finally revealed himself to the world. He was a an alternate universe version of an ancient Earth supervillain known as the Joker, one of the archenemies of the Batman. The citizens of Cargg were attacked by his minions, killed and injured with bombs, and infected with chemical weapons that altered their minds and caused them to attack each other. Various teams were able to disarm the bombs, capture his allies, and Brainy created a cure to the chemical weapon to revert the altered Carggites back to their original mental state.

Justin Time, Freelancer, and the Flash were able to capture the Joker himself.

There were significant Carggite casualities, but most of them occurred before we arrived. Thanks to the Legion’s actions, thousands of innocent lives were saved.

[She closes her eyes for a moment to center herself. Her eyes are wet and sad when she opens them.]

Unfortunately, one of our number was among the casualties. Blue Rose was injured during combat with the Joker minion known as Firefly. She sealed the wound and continued fighting, but it was ultimately a fatal one. We’ll be holding a service for her the day after tomorrow.

Mr. Ice Guy spoke with several Carggite civilians that witnessed her death and they claim that a man in a green cloak watched her die and then killed Firefly. When Yuuri and the Science Police found Firefly, apparently he’d been killed in a very unnatural way through a means that could only have been done by magic. Those of you that have been with the team since our fight with Galactus already knows what this means, but I’ll explain for those of you that don’t.

One of the early missions we faced after you displacee Legionnaires arrived was against the rift threat of a nearly indestructible cosmic being named Galactus, native to the world Nova Prime and several others on the team came from. Galactus set his sights on devouring Braal, and in an effort to stop him, the team released a powerful cosmic being native to our universe, the Spectre, to defeat him.

The Spectre is rumored to be a spirit of vengeance of Earth's Judeo-Christian God, and historical records indicate that he kills criminals who have murdered and gone unpunished. The Spectre pushed Galactus back out of our universe but we’ve been searching for signs of him ever since. This is the first confirmed sighting since we released him.

Given the traumatic nature of the mission, everyone who boarded the Silent Horizon is to attend a mandatory session with Dr. Ryk’rr. However, if any of the rest of you would like to make an appointment with her for psychological debriefing or grief or trauma counseling, please do so as well.

[Her expression is a mix of serious and gentle. She wants people to know that the staff is there to help, but that she isn’t going to budge on some of them getting mandatory sessions.]

A news drone caught the Joker announcing the existence of Chronoblivion to the entire UP. I’ve already spoken to President Wazzo and she’s already announced in a press conference to the public that the UP government is responsible for keeping Its existence a secret to prevent a mass panic. I’m sure we’ll have our detractors, but fortunately, this is one bit of blaster fire we won’t have to take all on our own. President Wazzo has taken primary responsibility for keeping it from the public.

[Her eyes harden and she sets her jaw.]

Given the shady nass going down with the U.P. Council, we don’t exactly trust them to keep the Joker contained on Takron Galtos, and we don’t exactly want to give him unfettered access to some of the galaxy’s worst criminals. For the time being, we’re keeping him on Legion World.

[She wrinkles her nose.]

I’m aware that it’s not an ideal situation, but this isn’t the first time we’ve kept a twenty-first century villain on board and we’re well-prepared for this situation. Brainy’s set up a ridiculous number of security measures to keep him from getting loose. You’re free to speak with him about them if you’d like the details.

Freelancer, Justin Time, and Flash, I’d appreciate you reporting in on what else the Joker said during your fight with him. The news drone only caught the part where he was talking about Chronoblivion; I’ll need to know what else he said, even if it seemed like nonsensical gibberish.

All of you who boarded the Silent Horizon did an amazing job. Lenny and the other fifty-four Roboticans are being downloaded into new mechforms as I speak. They are immensely grateful for what you’ve done. The could have been trapped there for thousands of years before their hardware degraded to the point where they would have died.

I know this mission was devastating to some of you. We did all we could to gain pre-mission intel but the bio-scans were limited. All unmanned drones that we sent in malfunctioned and died. All attempted telepathic scans were blocked and attempts by Dreamer to have a forced vision of whatever the future held on board -- to possibly use it to extrapolate what had happened in the past -- were unsuccessful. We knew that something bad had probably happened, which was why I sent such a large team, but we had no way of knowing the true nature of what was on board until you boarded.

You undertook a tremendous risk in doing so, and carried yourselves admirably. The Legion isn’t a stranger to missions gone bad or ones that turn into a living nightmare, and it’s not even the first time team members have been controlled by a malevolent force -- but this was the first time that many of you faced something like this. I know it’s easy to feel like undertaking that kind of hardship is meaningless, but you should be proud of what you accomplished. You not only saved the Roboticans, but those of you that stayed uninfected made sure that your fellow teammates made it out safely.

[Her gentle tone changes to one that’s more determined.]

Still, it’s time for there to be a few changes around here. Ever since we lost our missing teammates, over a year before you all showed up, the team has been reactive instead of proactive. Before all of got here, it was necessity. We’d been reduced from a team of over 30 sentients to a team of 10. We were barely surviving our missions; all we could do was respond to threats and pray that we’d keep our heads above water.

That’s all changed, thanks to all of you. Ever since you got pulled into our world by the Time Trapper, you’ve all stepped up and helped rebuild what was broken. So now it’s time to start playing offense. Because some UP Council members were involved in multiple decisions that adversely affected the team, we finally have some leads to investigate. The team will be reforming its Espionage division to proactively search for the identity of the traitors responsible, and we’ll be tapping some of you to go on missions to gather intel that can bring those individuals to justice.

The attack on Cargg is a good place to start looking -- there were changes made to the Science Police and Relegg’s security network that indicate someone high up on the ladder may have interceded in ways that left the city more vulnerable. Just like capturing the Joker gives us an edge, if we can narrow down who’s responsible, we might be able to interrogate them for information that can help us stop the other Heralds and Chronoblivion.

We’ll also be speaking with some of our allies on Sorcerer's World to see if we can get some leads on the Spectre, so we can hunt him down and imprison him once more -- he may be only targeting murders, but that is not how criminals are handled in the 31st century.

[She straightens her shoulders and raises her chin.]

I know that this has been hard on all of you. You’ve been ripped from your homes and thrust into a strange, maybe nigh-incomprehensible world with new or altered powers. You’ve taken on the burden of protecting a universe that isn’t yours, even if protecting it also protects your universes. You’ve suffered hardships and losses and betrayals, but you’re still standing.

The only thing I can tell you is that myself and the other Legionnaires from this universe are still standing with you. And we’re proud of you. You’ve saved the people you set out to save, and now we’re one step closer to stopping Chronoblivion. Now we actually have a chance.

[Her expression sharpens into one of grim determination.]

Blue Rose died trying to save the people of Cargg. The best way to honor her memory is to stop all this nass by bringing Its collaborators to justice and taking the fight to It. So that's what we're going to do.

I've got bad news, and more bad news preceded by good news. The bad news? Some of things he said seriously implied we may have a spy or a mole on board. He knew information only someone with constant access to Legion World would know.

The good news is that Brainy wasn't responsible for the missing Legionnaires, even by accident. Unfortunately, Chronoblivion and it's heralds are.

[Jason got out mostly okay. Some bruises here and there. Honestly, he'd had worse as a Power Ranger.

The news washes over him. Horrible things happening, teammates trapped in illusions, they saved the day, more monster stuff going on, mostly par for the course for the Legion.

Still, the news that they had a casualty was... Well, it threw him. He'd known it was a possibility, yeah. Even back home, there was always the risk, a risk that he'd gambled against more than once. Still, to be faced with it being a reality wasn't something he was quite prepared for.

He didn't really know Blue Rose at all. They just hadn't met outside the gym more than once or twice. So there's that level of distance between them and the news. It's sad, a tragedy to be sure, but Jason isn't quite as broken up about it as he feels he probably should be. Something to think about later.
]

So, uh. This might not be the best place or anything but, y'know. She wasn't that much older than most of us and that whole Legionnaire Legacy thing kind of...

Maybe I'd better write down some important information. Might be a good idea for everyone to do it, just in case.

I think I see what you're getting at, but why bother having that in two different places? Wouldn't it be smarter to have the Joker make his big arrival on the Silent Horizon? Or drop the Silent Horizon onto Cargg so that the Faceless could spread its influence on a global level?

[Then again, what does he know? Jason's big threat drops one monster at a time onto a city in California.]

Just seems to me that, if they're connected, it could've been done better.

If it wasn't a purposeful machination to divide the team across two fronts, I'll drink the contents of my test tubes.

[He's irritable right now. Because Pidge is right.]

Lax government-run security on Cargg allowed the Joker to run rampant at the exact same time that the UP government ran a test on an FTL drive that I warned them was faulty.

I wrote a 155-page report that outlined -- in excruciating detail -- why that star drive system wouldn't work, one that specifically highlighted the risk of extra-dimensional loss of vessel and crew through potential rips in spacetime.

[Brainy is pacing where he is in Medbay, one of the nurses chasing after him to try to mend a broken finger.]

What I didn't account for was the possibility that something from the outside would be brought back in. I assumed the transition outside the universe would most likely destroy the ship due to design flaws in the hull plating before they ever had the chance to transition back into the material universe -- but they must have fixed those before the rest run.

A Councilmember colluding with Chronoblivion and Its minions could have easily obtained knowledge that a dangerous entity was lurking around the edges of this universe in the region near the test site. Chronoblivion would know, after all, if It's lurking there Itself -- especially if the Faceless was a failed Herald.

[It certainly is within the realm of reason that Chronoblivion could possibly keep tabs on the Faceless' presence.]

The natural response to a potential threat with such an ambiguous nature was to make sure the mission team deployed had enough safety in numbers to deal with a potentially cosmic-level threat -- which left less of us behind to fend off the attack on Cargg.
isthisapidge: ([43])

[personal profile] isthisapidge 2017-01-22 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Pidge feels really validated right now, thanks Brainy.]

Then there's gotta be a pattern we can trace to whoever it was...How much data on the Council do we have to analyze?

[She's clearly got a lot of work to do and she wants to get started. A Council member being corrupt is just a fact she can accept without any fanfare.]

I'd like to read that report too, if you'll let me.

[That's more leisure reading for her, admittedly, but it's still important.]
