[ So. They can't raise the network on Legion World and the rest of...everybody, but at least the team dispatched to Epryria can talk to each other.

And they might have a lot to talk about, with the last minute changes in the plan, the inconvenient roadblocks...and at least as far as Joshua's concerned, the uneasy feeling this entire mission is giving him, because that's getting worse by the moment.

He's got a strong habit of professional paranoia, honed from his days in Ouroboros. He's also got a habit of meticulous attention to detail and to noting the details for later, from his old profession and his new one, so sharing information with the rest of the team is only natural.

He leaves Kid Q and Brainy off the contact list, though, because it's not only what those two told them that he wants to compare notes on. ]

Can I ask how everyone's briefings went?

Badly. Lots of changes. For the record, I still don't approve of these last-minute alterations to the security plans. They were just fine before, makes no damn sense to change them now.

[Well, they do make a little sense, but Rico is still unhappy about the changes.]

And if this means some diplomat's just asking to eat hot drokking lead in the middle of the signings, so be it.

Apparently there's some increased terrorist activity that's making them nervous? But from what I'm finding about these guys in the news, I'm surprised we weren't hearing a lot more about them while we were still making the plans.

What?

[Rico's voice is suddenly sharp. Less surprised, and more a narrow-focused beam of interrogation.]

That's one hell of an oversight. Failure to inform us about something as important as terrorist activity can't be excused. This goes beyond incompetence.

[A pause.]

Run by me the intel.

[ It comes as an attachment, with the basic rundown Joshua ~~will be given~~ totally already got, and he's added the links to news stories about their most recent incidents. Mostly bio-terrorism related, with one in particular being the release of a gene-altering virus. The news comes from varied sources and seems pretty legit; Joshua was going out of his way to see if there was conflicting information or something that looked planted, but he's come up dry on that front. ]

They seem to be a big deal. So I can completely buy the president being spooked by them as a reason to insist on having a more familiar security detail in key locations. [ Even if he doesn't agree. ] I'm not so willing to buy that they couldn't have seen this coming a mile away and been talking to us about it a lot earlier.

[There's a long moment of thoughtful consideration as Rico takes this all in.]

You're right. [He says, somewhat absentmindedly as he scans through the information on his visor display.] There are major changes to security I would've made if I'd had this to take into consideration. Security and prevention protocols are completely different when dealing with bioweapons compared to your conventional attacks, and they should know this. For a fact.

[Deep in thought, he brushes the underside of his jaw with his knuckles, tilting his head just slightly to the side.]

There could be somebody on the Epryrian side trying to pull something. Maybe a dissenter, or a sympathizer.

[He's not asking for an opinion, more so that he's muttering to himself. Now why would an entire recently-active terrorist threat would be hidden from them? If not hidden, then omitted - but that's basically the same thing in his eyes. Ignorance of the law didn't mean squat. Same goes for incompetence.]

Honestly, I think something's felt a little weird about this one even before now...

[ He shakes his head. ]

But this is the first point where I've actually had something to quantify about why, instead of just "I've got a bad feeling about this."

It was a little troubling. Rico has already told you about some of it.

[ There isn't much he could add. The plans have changed, and there is the possibility of gaps in their security because of it. Disguised Legionnaires are being added to the mix in hopes of mitigating the danger. ]

I worry that their response to the terrorist activity you've mentioned is to replace the people already in place the day of the event. Do you know if they suspect us playing a role in it?

[ And a terrorist group can do so much harm to a great number of people, more than just the diplomats. If those disguised Legionnaires are discovered, could that wrongly imply to the Epryrians that the Legion is in league with them? ]

This is separate to the briefing... However, has anyone had an interference with their systems or senses earlier today? My scans do not show any error, but something caused a minor glitch. I thought it might have to do with our communication problems.

[ He's the only mechanically based person on the group, but he doesn't know if anyone has implants that would be able receive interference like he did. (He also doesn't know if the issue, as small as it was, was interference based. It's just a working guess.) ]

I haven't heard anything about them suspecting us, but this group seems like they've been pretty well established for a while. I could see someone getting paranoid enough to think so, but I think it'd be a hard sell to get anyone else on board with it, and a decision to take us off those areas would probably need at least a few people to sign off on it.

[ He thinks, at least; who knows how these people run their bureaucracy. ]

Interference...? [ He frowns. ] I don't think so? I've had a headache all morning, but that's not exactly weird. [ He's good at working through his own discomfort, after all, so it doesn't register as much of anything in his mind. ]

I've had a headache all morning too. Twice is coincidence - three times is a pattern.

[Excuse Rico's interjection. He'd passed it off as one of his usual occasional migraines at first. Maybe the planetary atmosphere didn't agree with him. But coupled with everything else?]

...this gets better and better, doesn't it.

[ A breath. ]

Let's assume for the sake of argument that Zenyatta doesn't count towards a pattern, since he's an ar- [ They don't call them archaisms here, right. ] Mechanically based? Is that how I should say it? The same things won't necessarily affect us as would affect him, and vice versa.

[ Although the line between biological and mechanical does seem to be awfully blurry to these people. ]

That still puts us at two. One more and I think we can safely say something's weird.

It is possible that some wavelength could interrupt my systems and still be detectable by humans in some way. However, I do think a third person feeling off this morning would give more weight to some kind of connection...

[ He doesn't want to jump at shadows, but with everything else going one, it could actually be something... ]

I don't have a headache, but Brainy seemed to be nursing one. A pretty severe one, from the way he flinched.

That geek? Hm. Didn't have much to say, did he?

[A pause.]

You realize you're talking to another geek, right?

[A pause. He doesn't want to add to anyone's paranoia, but his nerd tendencies compel him to share all relevant data.]

A lot of things don't affect me the same way they do other people though. My powers burn through a lot of medications.

[Quick, someone else admit they don't have a headache before Rico decides they're all being drugged.]

We have been asked to provide security for this event, yes? Tell me, does it make sense to you for the extra muscle that was asked to be here to be put in the public, away from key locations?

But when I was fishing for more about the terrorists, they gave each other this look, like they found that...surprising? No, almost more like...concerning.

... We have been compromised.

[ There was a clear picture forming in his head right now. A picture of Brainy and Kid Q under some kind of mind control, giving up key defense positions, to let terrorists infiltrate the proceedings. ]

Be on your guard. We may have already failed to keep terrorists out of the proceedings.

My group was part of the president's personal security detail, and now we are part of crowd control.

This stinks of sabotage.
