I'd like it to make up its mind about what to do with me, if at all possible.

Can you tell if any one action is setting the changes off? Or do they seem completely random?

There doesn't seem to be anything causing them.

It comes out of nowhere. Sometimes it switches back almost immediately.

Then if you cannot locate a reason, I suggest trying a distraction. Put your attention not on your changes but on something else. There are many books and media to entertain oneself with, and you may find something new to enjoy.
