[This is kind of stupid, really--he doesn't think he actually owes her anything, but maybe she's looking for some kind of catharsis. It's no skin off his back to give it to her, and perhaps the part of him that needs to atone for an entire lifetime of "could've done better"s wants someone to look him in the eye and tell him he's not a hero.
