Once upon a time, when he was a child, he sometimes showed off his Firebending to try to outdo his sister or gain his father's approval, but enough failures in that particular area, enough rebukes by his father telling him how terrible he was, made him stop trying -- at least where his Firebending was concerned. After he'd given up on that, he tried other ways to get his father's attention, like being in his war room.]

Nothing's changed. The only difference is I can get a stronger flame with less effort.
