[Garrus says coolly. His voice, his eyes, his posture stays even. Inside though, there is a flicker of anger as Rico's words land just a little closer to home than Garrus would like to admit. They're questions he'd asked himself after Saleon had been dealt with, and that had bubbled up from the back of his mind again after Sidonis.]
You got a glimpse of what he did to those people. You didn't see how completely he'd mangled their insides. At least two of the subjects we had in custody would have died within a month without treatment, just like a half-dozen other of Saleon's former employees did before we caught wind of him. He had every intention of using those people until their bodies gave out. Firing on the transport was a risk, but it gave them a better chance of survival than they would have had otherwise. Either way, they would have been the last people that he hurt.
[There was conviction behind those words. He believed them in the moment, he still believed them now. It was cold, maybe ruthlessly pragmatic, but it's what made the most sense to him.
[Though, there was some small part of him that made it's voice heard during quiet moments that asked why it made that sense to him. Because he was angry that Saleon got away. He was furious, and Sidonis had opened his eyes to how much that clouded his judgement. It made him doubt his decisions - every tough choice he'd made had suddenly become suspect.
[But this wound wasn't fresh. He'd had time to process, rationalize, and accept that he'd probably made some mistakes. He couldn't dwell on it or he'd slowly drive himself crazy. He couldn't go back and change them, just keep moving forward and try to do better next time.
[It's not an obvious thing. Nowhere near the surface, not conveyed in frustrated, downcast looks or a quivering lip. He still believed that, however impulsively, he had made the right call and C-Sec had made the wrong one. But maybe, just maybe, Rico could catch a hint of it.
[Either way Garrus had had enough of this crap.]
I'm done wasting my breath. [Because trying to explain himself to Rico is. Rico's going to pin every word to the wall like a specimen for dissection, look for ways to tear into them and get under his skin.] I don't have to justify myself to you, and if you don't think I'm 'fit' for duty, file an official complaint.
[And with that, before Rico can offer any frustratingly smug response, Garrus ends the call.]
