They help tell the story. In a normal play, the characters speech, their expressions, and their actions tell you how they feel. In a musical, the music and dancing can help reinforce those things, and help the viewer emphasize with the characters. Or they could be completely at odds, the lyrics of the songs saying one thing while the music the actors are singing to is in a entirely different tone.
