Because that's the shape of things - Wash is from years in his future and at least some time after York, and they both leave him, and while apparently he and York are at least on better-than-brawling terms . . . that was something they did. It's something North can't really regret, knowing he could have only shifted one person out with him, and that person was always, always going to be his sister.
It's sad, but it's not something he can or would change, and he figures their best-case scenario from here is managing to stay effective as teammates.
