You say that like 'dealing with it' wasn't a goal in the first place.

[ It's not as though he wants to make this the biggest problem it can possibly be. Retreating gives him time to think, to collect himself. To compartmentalize and bear through this without becoming non-functional.

Except apparently, he can't be trusted to do that alone. ]
