Most of what we've got on the causes is more theory and educated guesswork than solid data, although I think the working hypothesis on what's keeping us here is about as solid as it's going to get right now. The solid data we do have is a lot of numbers that probably don't look like much of anything if you don't have a moderate grounding in quantum physics.
