Okay, so you know how in sci-fi movies where scientists are worried about radiation, they wave a little handheld thing that makes ticking sounds?

That's a geiger counter. They're used to measure radiation, and they're named after this scientist called Hans Geiger that helped develop the Geiger–Müller tube -- um, one of the components that's used in them.

[A pause.]
