[ The video turns on showing nothing but stark pink, and it takes a few moments for the camera to zoom out to an armoured soldier, pretty in pink. ]

---man. I am so lost. Is there a map on this thing? I don't think it's working.

[ The camera shakes a little as Donut figures out how to use it. In the background, the sounds of the parade filter through and it's easy to figure out he's in some kind of high-end store. It takes him a minute but finally he gets it working. ]

Heeey guuys.... [He claps his hands together in supplication. ] Can someone tell me how to get back to the Burning Sands? I'm kind of... lost.

[ He shifts in place. ]

[OOC: Before the Ambush during the "Tinker, Tailor, Hero, Spy" Plot. Donut was supposed to watch the historic event as a social occasion but somehow got lost. ]

Oh my god, when did you show up?!

[ Of all the people the Time Trapper could choose, Grif is sure he's near the bottom of the list to begin with. He's the outlier here already. Donut showing up on top of that is so unlikely that he's almost offended, somehow. ]

[ He's maybe a little different, though. Grif is running about five years behind the timeline. ]

[ He sounds a little confused but that's something Grif should be used to. Talking about stuff Grif should be used too --]

[ He nods matter-of-factly. ]

Well, for one thing, you don't have that helmet hair I always told you about.

[ Even through the visor you can practically see his smile shining through. ]

Yup, I always knew your hair had more potential.

[ Grif finally catches up to his own thoughts again, thrown for a loop as he was by that question sailing in from left field. His talking-to-Donut muscles haven't been getting as much exercise as the rest of him. ]

Forget about that. When did you get here. Are you Legion now or what?

But, Grif! [ he whines ] How do you expect me to just forget about it!

It's shiny! And not because of grease or sweat, either! [ How can you dangle a carrot in front of him and expect him not to bite! ]

You expect me to believe that your hair is fluffier than ever and it's all due to sonic showers!

[ He puts his hands on his hips, he's not having it mister! He's silent for a moment as an idea suddenly dawns bringing with it a knowing smile.]

Oh, I get it~

You just don't want me to steal your new hair care regimen~

[ A wink. ]

[ He did not miss this internal dying sensation, really. ]

[ His delivery is flat and completely insincere, but that's never stopped Donut, has it? ]

By the way, how long have you been here? I didn't know this Time Trapper person had kidnapped you too.

[ A pause. ]

You don't think he kidnapped Sarge too! And Simmons! [ a gasp ] What about Lopez?! You don't think he'd leave him behind!

I've been here a couple months, and I haven't seen anybody else from the team but you.

[ Thank God, he doesn't say. Not that he hasn't missed arguing with Simmons. ]

I think it's okay though, cause time's supposed to be stopped for us while we're not there? At least that's what all the science guys and Master Chief and people think.

[ He doesn't completely trust that, because Grif's used to things not turning out well, but on the other hand missing months of time in Blood Gulch actually doesn't sound like a bad plan. ]

You mean.... you've been here all alone? By... yourself?

[ For a social butterfly like him that's practically torture. He can't imagine anyone having to go through what he went through back on the farm. All alone with no one to talk to, no one to be yourself with. Donut had finally found his place in Blood Gulch. A place he could belong too. People who cared about him. So hearing that Grif had been removed from all that and placed here all alone with none of the guys to help him. That... that... ]

What? No, I'm fine! It's fine. There are tons of people here.

[ Grif completely misunderstands, but he also didn't quite have that same attachment to the rest of the team. He hasn't been through the Freelancer or Chorus fiascos. He was used to them, and has even missed them sometimes in the way one misses people they're used to being stuck with, but he had no illusions that the rest of the reds knew him particularly well or cared about what happened to him.

Sarge never treated him well and though he and Simmons were arguably best friends, that was a relationship full of spite and setbacks too. (It's easier to reflect on the bad parts than the good, now that he's trying not to miss that.) Donut was... Donut is... Grif's pretty sure Donut doesn't quite get him. And Lopez didn't speak english but Grif knew he was a dick anyway.

Grif doesn't feel like he lost much, really. He was never alone in his mind, he found a bunch of new people to argue with and complain about and tease. It's... mostly been going okay for him. Some of them have even been, inexplicably, nice to him like it's no big thing. Some of them like him. He doesn't entirely understand why, sometimes, but he'll take it. ]

Things are pretty good, aside from the whole space apocalypse thing.

[ Grif doesn't envy whoever had to brief Donut on that. ]

But don't you miss them?

I've only been gone a couple of hours and I already miss Sarge, and Simmons, Lopez too. Doc and Church, and Caboose, and Tucker, and Wash and Carolina, and Epsilon, and Kimball, and--

[ He sniffs. ]

We were supposed to have cake after everything.

[ After they made it through that fight. After they defeated the bad guy. They'd always done it before so he had no reason to believe they wouldn't get out of that fight too. ]

[ He's not sure why this is such a big revelation. And he's tough and self-reliant and a cool guy who doesn't need friends, right? ]

...And I don't know who some of those people even are, so.

[ Yeah, that other shoe had to drop eventually. ]

Umm... I know this place seems pretty cool and everything, but I really should get back to the guys. You see we're in the middle of a pretty important fight and I promised Doc we'd get vegan take-out after.

[ He's not really understanding why he's asking him about Wash, but the momentary confusion is sufficient to knock him back on track. With just a few simple words he's not as sad as he was a few moments before but then Donut never really stayed sad for long. It wasn't in his nature. ]
